Outsmarted by a One-Year Old

I received a frantic call late one evening from my sister-in-law, "Did the twins leave their binkies (blankets) at your house?" Sure enough, there they were sitting on the chair in the living room. Two soft little blankets, one blue and one pink, which the twins never left their house without. The forgotten blankets warranted the efforts of a late night trip to pick them up, because no one would get any sleep until they were returned to their rightful owners. This seemed like way too much trouble for just a blanket to me.

This incident in combination with other horror stories of misplaced or lost blankets scared me. As cute as they were dragging around their little pink and blue blankets with them everywhere they went, I was determined to sidestep the drama. So, when my son started to show an interest in his blanket, which was at about four months old, I set my plan in motion. I bought my son a dozen different blankets and switched them out nightly in an effort to keep him from getting too attached to any single blanket.

I only thought my plan worked flawlessly. My son, now fifteen months old, does not have a single "blankie". Oh no, he thinks every blanket he sees belongs to him. He will collect two or three and drag them around the house with him. Or worse, steal the blankets from every one he sees.

Although I may not be making any late night trips to retrieve a precious blanket, no one in my house can use a blanket without being challenged by my little blanket-tycoon. So, if you come by my house on a chilly night you will have better luck keeping warm if you just leave you jacket on.
